TechTown originated as a collective effort to raise awareness of Portland as a place where tech companies and workers could grow and thrive. Its first initiative in 2013 was a video story of the local tech environment which has been viewed more than 46,000 times in places like Boston, New Orleans, London and Tel Aviv and has helped local companies attract people from outside the region.

Two years later a second video showcased the real stories of local industry professionals who had moved to Portland to grow their careers.

Since then, the Techtown collaboration has evolved to recognize that fostering diverse and inclusive companies that offer opportunities to all is not only the right thing to do, but also benefits our community in terms of innovation, team functioning, and bottom line results.

Techtown Portland Community Event

We have grown to include more than 20 tech companies, representing more than 2,300 workers, as well as partners in education, government and nonprofits. We share a commitment to take collective action and be accountable regarding the underrepresentation of women and people of color in our industry.

Nationally, the tech industry is expected to have a talent shortfall of 1.4 million by 2020. Being inclusive and attracting talent from throughout our local community will address the talent gap and make us stronger as a community. We can do more together than alone to build the necessary talent pool and establish Portland as a place where everyone can have a fruitful career in technology.

Now that you know a little more about TechTown we hope you’ll come join us in making Portland tech even better.

Portland tech companies have joined the Diversity & Inclusion Pledge since its initial launch in 2015.
