Pledge Community Feature: Carol Ward, Janrain

We are excited to announce the latest addition to the TechTown Diversity Pledge, Janrain!

Janrain is the first choice of global enterprises for mission-critical customer identity and access management (CIAM) needs. The largest brands in the world trust Janrain to manage their most valuable assets: their customers’ identities. And now, Janrain is trusting TechTown Portland to support it in its mission to be a company that honors diversity and inclusion.

Janrain has always strived to be a diverse company. Joining the Tech Town Diversity Pledge formalizes this commitment publicly and allows participation in diversity and inclusion efforts organized by TechTown including regular convening, the annual diversity & inclusion survey, and online resources.

Carol Ward, VP of Human Resources at Janrain, was gracious enough to provide some further insights into why Janrain joined the TechTown community and movement, its future goals as a pledge company, and the company’s advice for fellow tech companies and tech job seekers:

Why is being a TechTown Diversity Pledge company important to Janrain?

Janrain believes a diverse workforce makes us a stronger organization by broadening the experiences and viewpoints that inform our business. In addition, attracting a diverse workforce and retaining those workers through an inclusive workplace aligns with our Janrain corporate values to support a diverse environment and provide equal employment opportunities for all.

How does being based in Portland impact your company’s culture and/or commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce?

While statistically Portland may not be as diverse as other cities, its population is changing rapidly, and we see opportunity there. Janrain encourages our teams to participate in diverse industry groups throughout the region to attract a more diverse candidate pool. We also support remote workforce placement when possible; allowing us to consider underrepresented populations in other geographic regions.

What would you like to see happen in the next 12 months at your company?

I would like to see more women and minorities in management positions as well as in all teams at Janrain.

Why should other Portland tech companies consider joining the TechTown Diversity Pledge?

Companies banding together with common cause and learning from each other makes us all better. Trading ideas and resources to make Portland a more diverse and inclusive place is good for all of us – business and community. The companies that are more advanced in their diversity efforts can share their experiences with implemented programs and the success and lessons learned.

What advice would you give someone looking to enter this industry/get hired?

First, you must have the skills and (depending on the role) education to fulfill the responsibilities of the position. Participate in local industry networking events. Reach out to talent acquisition teams in companies that interest you. Portland can be a generous community!

To the seasoned people in our industry, be generous with your time to mentor and help others network in the community. Pay It Forward!

We hope you will join us in welcoming Janrain to the TechTown Diversity Pledge Community!
